Why Spain

Spain is one country with the character of six — and every one of them is worth seeing slowly.

Barcelona and Seville barely share a language, let alone a sensibility. La Rioja wine country has nothing in common with the Costa Brava. Mallorca’s finca villages operate at a pace the cities haven’t known in decades. And Andalusia — Moorish palaces, whitewashed villages, flamenco in a cave bar — is the Spain that most visitors arrive expecting and few are prepared for when they actually encounter it.

Taryn Harrison has designed Spain itineraries for over 25 years. Lexi Blade adds specialist depth across southern Spain and the Balearics. Between them, they know every parador worth staying in, every bodega worth visiting, and exactly how to pace a Spain itinerary so it breathes.

Alhambra — Pre-Booked Every Time
The Nasrid Palaces sell out months ahead. Juniper secures your timed-entry tickets at the moment of booking — one of the single most important advantages of travelling with a specialist on any Spain itinerary.
Paradors, Fincas & Boutique Hotels
Spain’s parador network — medieval castles, monasteries, and Renaissance palaces converted into government-run hotels — offers accommodation that simply has no equivalent elsewhere in Europe. Juniper selects the ones worth staying in and pairs them with the best independent boutique options.
AVE Rail & Self-Drive Options
Spain’s high-speed AVE network is one of the best in the world — Madrid to Barcelona in 2.5 hours, Seville in the same. For coastal and rural exploration, self-drive itineraries give you the Costa Brava headlands, the Sierra Nevada mountain road, and Mallorca’s inland villages on your own schedule.

Most clients spend $4,000–$12,000 per person for a complete custom Spain itinerary — trips start at $2,500 and your specialist will walk through exactly what that looks like for yours.

Arrive in Barcelona
Barcelona+
Welcome to Spain! Upon arrival a private driver meets you at El Prat Airport and transfers you to your accommodation. Spend the remainder of the day exploring at your leisure — the Gothic Quarter rewards an unhurried first evening on foot. Let the energy of one of Europe’s great cities announce itself slowly.
After breakfast, a full day to explore what Barcelona does best. There are numerous options to choose from for today’s food and drink experience — from a sangria workshop and beach picnic on the Barceloneta waterfront to a guided tasting tour through La Boqueria and the Eixample’s finest bars. Your specialist will help you choose the perfect experience based on your interests. The Gothic Quarter’s medieval lanes, the Passeig de Gràcia, and the waterfront promenade fill whatever time remains.
A day dedicated to the architectural genius that makes Barcelona unique in the world. The Sagrada Família — Gaudí’s unfinished cathedral, under construction for over 140 years — demands a visit with pre-arranged skip-the-line access. Park Güell’s mosaic terraces and Mediterranean views follow. Casa Batlló or Casa Milà in the afternoon, then the Passeig de Gràcia for a final Modernista immersion before dinner.
After breakfast, a private driver takes you south along the Mediterranean coast to Valencia — a journey of roughly three hours that arrives in a city with a completely different character from Barcelona. Valencia is Spain at its most local: the Silk Exchange, the Central Market, the City of Arts and Sciences, and the Malvarrosa beach district. Settle into your hotel, explore the city at your own pace this afternoon, and let the change of pace land.
Valencia invented paella — this is the city to understand it properly. A paella cooking class with a local chef using produce from the Central Market is one of the most authentic Spanish experiences available. Alternatively, a countryside wine tour through the Valencia DO vineyards offers a completely different perspective on the region. The City of Arts and Sciences — Santiago Calatrava’s futuristic complex along the old Turia riverbed — is extraordinary at any time of day. An Art & Sciences food and drink tour is another excellent way to take in both in one afternoon. Your specialist will shape the day around your interests.
A private driver or high-speed AVE train takes you north to Madrid — Spain’s capital, and a city that operates on its own extraordinary schedule. Madrileños eat dinner at 10pm and consider midnight early. The city’s energy after dark is one of the genuine pleasures of Spanish travel. Settle into your hotel, take your bearings in the Salamanca or Malasaña neighborhood, and let the capital introduce itself at your own pace.
Take a day to see and taste your way through Madrid. A segway and tapas tour is one of the best ways to cover the city’s key landmarks while eating — the Gran Vía, the Retiro Park, the Plaza Mayor, and the traditional tabernas of La Latina, all with a guide who knows exactly which bar to stop at. The Museo del Prado — Velázquez, Goya, El Greco — deserves a visit in the afternoon with pre-arranged access. The evening is yours: tapas and flamenco at a tablao, or a final crawl through the streets your specialist recommends.
After breakfast, a private driver takes you to Madrid-Barajas Airport for your return flight. Your Juniper specialist remains reachable throughout departure day — and your in-app itinerary stays accessible wherever you need it next. Get ready to say farewell to Spain.

Common Questions

Spain travel questions

April through June and September through October are ideal — warm, sunny, and without the intense summer crowds or 40°C heat of July and August. Seville and Granada in particular are brutal in high summer. Barcelona and the Costa Brava are more manageable year-round. Spring offers wildflowers in Andalusia; autumn, the grape harvest across La Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
Spain has one of Europe's finest high-speed rail networks. The AVE connects Madrid with Barcelona (2.5 hrs), Seville (2.5 hrs), Valencia (1.5 hrs), and Málaga (2.5 hrs) at speeds up to 310 km/h. For coastal exploration and rural regions like La Rioja or Ribera del Duero, a rental car gives you far more flexibility. Juniper plans the right mix for each section of your itinerary.
Absolutely — and one of our most popular. Seville's Alcázar gardens at dusk, a private flamenco show, a finca in Mallorca's Tramuntana hills, Rioja wine country, or a boutique hotel overlooking the Alhambra — Spain offers extraordinary romantic settings across very different landscapes and cultures. Ask about our Spain honeymoon experiences.
Yes — the Alhambra in Granada is one of the most visited monuments in the world and tickets sell out weeks, sometimes months, ahead. Juniper secures your timed-entry Nasrid Palaces tickets at the point of booking. Attempting to book independently at the last minute is one of the most common mistakes on Spanish itineraries.
Yes — our 14-day Highlights of Spain & Portugal itinerary covers Porto, Lisbon, Sintra, Seville, Granada, Barcelona and Madrid. Many clients also prefer a shorter combination, such as Lisbon and Seville or Porto and Barcelona. Your Juniper specialist will design the right balance of both countries for your travel dates and interests.
