Why Iceland

A landscape that makes everything else feel ordinary.

Iceland is not a destination that can be rushed through. The Northern Lights are not guaranteed on any single night — which is precisely why Juniper builds Iceland itineraries with multiple nights away from light pollution and flexibility built in. The glaciers, the geothermal landscapes, the waterfalls — none of it photographs correctly. You have to stand in it.

Taryn Harrison has been designing Iceland itineraries for years alongside her Ireland and UK work. She knows the glass-ceiling cabins that deliver on the Northern Lights promise, the guides who make the geology come alive, and the lodges in the Highlands that most travelers never find. Iceland done right is one of the most profound travel experiences available to an American traveler.

Northern Lights Strategy
September through March, with peak conditions October–February. Juniper builds Iceland winter itineraries around maximizing Northern Lights chances: locations away from light pollution, multiple nights, and a specialist who monitors forecasts.
Design Lodges & Glass Cabins
Iceland has some of the most extraordinary accommodation in the world: glass-ceiling cabins designed specifically for Northern Lights viewing, geothermal lodges in remote locations, and design hotels in Reykjavík that hold their own against anywhere in Europe.
Iceland Honeymoon
One of the world’s truly extraordinary honeymoon destinations. A glass-ceiling cabin in a geothermal landscape, the Blue Lagoon at midnight, the Glacier Lagoon with icebergs drifting past in silence. Iceland honeymoons are unlike anything else Juniper designs.

Iceland is a significant investment. Most clients spend $5,000–$12,000 per person for a complete custom Iceland itinerary — trips start at $2,500 and your specialist will walk through exactly what that looks like for yours.

Fire & Ice Tour — 7 Days

Reykjavík · Golden Circle · Lava Fields · Blue Lagoon · Glacier Lagoon

This is a sample itinerary — for inspiration only. Every Juniper trip is designed from scratch around you. Many clients love an itinerary very similar to this one — if something here resonates, your specialist can build something just like it (or better) specifically for your travel style, dates, and group.

1
Arrive in Reykjavík
Reykjavík+
Welcome to Iceland. A private driver meets you at Keflavík Airport and brings you into Reykjavík — a journey of around 45 minutes. Check into your hotel and take the afternoon at your own pace. The city is compact and walkable: the old harbour, the colorful corrugated iron houses of the old town, and the Hallgrímskirkja church tower that dominates the skyline. Your specialist will have arranged a gentle first evening based on your interests.
Overnight: Reykjavík
Iceland's most famous day circuit, done properly with a private guide. Þingvellir National Park — where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, and where Iceland's first parliament was established in 930 AD. The Geysir geothermal area, where the Great Geysir erupts every few minutes. Gullfoss, the double waterfall that drops 32 metres into a glacial canyon. Return to Reykjavík via the back roads for a different perspective on the landscape.
Overnight: Reykjavík
The Reykjanes Peninsula is where Iceland's volcanic character is most raw and immediate — a landscape of black lava fields, steaming fissures, and coastal cliffs. Your private guide takes you through the UNESCO Global Geopark that covers the entire peninsula. The Bridge Between Continents, the lighthouse at Reykjanesviti, and the Gunnuhver geothermal area with its mud pools and steam columns are all part of the day.
Overnight: Reykjavík
Iceland's most famous experience, and one that genuinely justifies the reputation. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa set in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula — the mineral-rich silica water maintains a temperature of around 39°C year-round. Your specialist will have arranged entry at the optimal time to avoid the crowds. In winter, the experience of soaking in the warm water beneath Northern Lights is genuinely extraordinary.
Overnight: Blue Lagoon
A full day on the South Coast heading east to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon — one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Europe. Icebergs calve from Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and drift through the lagoon before the current carries them to Diamond Beach, where they wash ashore glittering on black sand. The drive east along the Ring Road passes black sand beaches, sea stacks, waterfalls, and the vast Skeiðarársandur glacial outwash plain. Return to Reykjavík.
Overnight: Glacier Lagoon
A final full day to explore Reykjavík properly. The city rewards the traveler who slows down — the National Museum of Iceland for context on the country's history, the Harpa Concert Hall for its extraordinary glass facade and harbour views, the Old Harbor area for fresh langoustine and the best fish and chips in the country. The Laugavegur shopping street and the Reykjavík Art Museum round out a day that leaves most travelers wishing they had longer.
Overnight: Reykjavík
After breakfast, a private driver collects you from your Reykjavík hotel and brings you to Keflavík Airport — around 45 minutes. Most travelers leave Iceland already planning their return — the country has a way of making everything else feel ordinary by comparison. Your Juniper specialist remains reachable throughout departure day.

“Everything planned by Juniper Tours went incredibly smoothly. Every driver and guide was wonderful and the one time we thought we might miss a train, because of unexpected traffic, our driver was on the phone with the 24/7 service desk working to book new tickets for us. I was very impressed with the service and the app.”

Common Questions

Iceland travel questions

September through March, with peak conditions in October, November, and February. You need clear skies and a solar storm of sufficient intensity — neither is guaranteed. Your Juniper specialist will design the itinerary to maximize your chances: staying away from Reykjavík's light pollution, building in multiple nights in areas with clear sky forecasts, and booking properties with good Northern Lights access. Summer in Iceland means the Midnight Sun instead — a completely different but equally extraordinary experience.
Seven to ten days covers the Golden Circle, the South Coast, and Reykjavík well — without rushing. Ten to twelve days allows you to add the Snæfellsnes Peninsula or North Iceland. For the Highlands (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Askja), plan for nine days minimum, and these areas are only accessible June through September. For Northern Lights hunting, seven nights gives you a reasonable number of attempts.
Not necessarily. Juniper designs Iceland trips both ways: self-drive in a 4WD automatic, or fully guided with a private driver. Self-drive gives you maximum flexibility and the freedom to stop wherever the landscape demands it. A private driver-guide removes the navigation stress and adds local knowledge. Many clients combine both — self-drive the Ring Road, private guide for the Highlands where F-roads require specific 4WD experience.
Genuinely extraordinary. A glass-ceiling cabin watching the Northern Lights from your bed. Soaking in a geothermal lagoon at midnight. Standing at the edge of a glacier in silence. The Glacier Lagoon at golden hour with icebergs drifting past. Iceland honeymoons are unlike anything else in Europe, and Taryn Harrison designs them regularly — she knows exactly which properties and experiences deliver.
